Cryomancer Review: Ben & Jerry’s Bonnaroo Buzz

   Posted by: Jesse   in Reviews

My all-time favorite flavor of Ben & Jerry’s was From Russia with Buzz. A blend of the now in the graveyard White Russian and the still in Scoop Shops caffeinated classis Coffee, Coffee BuzzBuzzBuzz, it was delicious but I think I have finally found an ice cream worthy of being its successor.

The Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is an annual celebration where world-class performers play for days and good times roll for miles across the Tennessee countryside.  Together with Bonnaroo we captured the festival magic, the spirit of Tennessee and the flavor of local Coffee County in this incredible medley of creamy coffee, crunchy toffee & whiskey-tickled caramel.  Now your taste buds can enjoy the ‘Roo-phoria all year round.

Okay, so maybe I have a thing for alcohol in my food. Between Car Bomb Cupcakes or the time I made Bailey’s Custard, it certainly looks like a trend. Bonnaroo Buzz’s has two bases in it – a classic, creamy coffee and malt ice cream with perfect consistency. The two are swirled together in a light brown and lighter brown coloring that melts on the tongue. The malt gives the tiniest hint of bitterness that complements the coffee beautifully.

When the pint said chunks of toffee, they really meant chunks. Ben & Jerry’s has always excelled at putting pieces you can really bite into, but some of the toffee chunks are just way too big. Like the size of my spoon, can’t they be half that size? It certainly makes sharing the pint a dangerous game of fighting for the chunks or waiting for someone to mine their piece out before passing it along. But the toffee is excellent.

The whiskey caramel swirl is surprisingly subtle but gives you that little hint of whiskey. Unlike the salted caramel in Late Night Snack, this swirl adds in some subtlety and depth that really brings the coffee, malt and toffee all together. And there isn’t much caramel, but enough to get the job done.

While it doesn’t quite take the place of From Russia with Buzz, I doubt anything ever will. But this ice cream is a delicious blend of coffee, malt, toffee and caramel that is sure to please. Just be careful of the extra large chunks.
