Firefly Recipe: Shepherd Book’s Fried Tomatoes

   Posted by: Jesse   in Recipe

Recipes based off fantasy and science fiction aren’t anything new, but more often than not, many recipes leave a lot to be desired (No one really wants to eat Spoo, right?). But some places in the ‘Verse make better food than others. So I’ve taken a page from Shepherd Book and am starting off the Firefly & Serenity Recipes!

First up is Shepherd Book’s fried tomatoes as first seen in the episode Serenity. Little more than tomatoes and a few spices, this dish takes inspiration from classic Italian seasonings from Earth-that-Was. It works great as a side, but overcooking the tomatoes can make it a challenge to eat with chopsticks.

Shepherd Book’s Tomatoes

Ingredients
3-4 fresh tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon of Basil
1/2 teaspoon of Rosemary
1/2 teaspoon of Oregano
Salt and Pepper to taste
2 Tablespoons of Olive oil

Equipment
Frying pan
Spatula or chopsticks

Directions
Slice the tomatoes so they’re a centimeter thick. Put the oil, basil, rosemary and oregano in the frying pan over a medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add in the tomatoes and saute them but make sure they stay firm, otherwise you’ll end up with tomato sauce. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm as a side.

The secret to this recipe is giving the spices time to infuse the oil while it’s heating up. This is especially important with the rosemary, since it can be painful if not cooked enough.
