All adventures should begin after breakfast. Or maybe second breakfast, or lunch or elevensies. Hobbit customs aside, a good breakfast is a fantastic way to start to start the day. But those days off when you can take your time since you’re not being hunted by orcs and kobolds, the waffle is an excellent item that has far more uses than you’d first expect.
But heed this warning bakers, each waffle iron is unique and has its own temperament. Each iron is infused with the spirit of a flame-kin and some of them burn brighter than others, so always check your tomes!
Makes 8-10 waffles
1 Cup of flour
4 Tablespoons of sugar
1 Tablespoon of baking powder
1/2 a teaspoon of cinnamon
Pinch of salt
4 Medium eggs
1/3 Cup of vegetable oil
1 Cup of milk
1 Tablespoon of vanilla extract
Fresh fruit (berries work best)
Three bowls (one large, two medium)
1. Sift all the dry ingredients together except the salt in a large mixing bowl. In another bowl whisk together the milk, oil, egg yolks and vanilla extract. In a third bowl, put the egg whites and salt.
2. Whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Whisk the bowl of liquids into the dry ingredients until a smooth batter is formed.
3. Fold the egg whites into the batter – do not over mix and immediately begin preparing waffles according to your waffle maker’s directions.
4. Top the waffles with fresh fruit, maple syrup or any other topping you like!
Looking for a more challenging adventure? There are plenty of other options for the waffles, both with ingredients and their uses. If you have it on hand, use buttermilk instead of regular milk. Buttermilk works better for cooking.
Now, this recipe makes a fair amount of waffles which most likely will mean you’re going to have some leftover loot! Don’t worry because the waffle is far more versitile than you’d first expect. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge or in the freezer and toasted later on. Waffles also make an excellent base for breakfast sandwiches. For the cyromancers out there, the waffle was the original ice cream cone so the waffle makes a fantastic add-on to a sundae.
